appearance

Rakka looks like a young teenage girl. She is 151 cm tall, and of average build. Her hair is a messy chestnut brown, and it falls to her shoulders. Her eyes are a dark red-brown color, more brown than red. Her most distinguishing features are small grey wings that jut out of her shoulderblades, and a glowing yellow halo that hovers above her head. The wings grew, and the halo was given to her, but both are parts of her body--she can be dragged around by her halo, although it would be painful for her, and plates can be set on them with no wobbling.

Rakka wears a long, cream-colored dress with an orange-red collar resembling a sailor school uniform. The dress is simple because it is secondhand, as all clothes the haibane wear are. She wears simple wooden sandals. She also has a pair of dark red boots lined with wool or fur for colder weather. She has a coat which is chocolate brown with cream lining the cuffs, collar, and bottom of the coat. It buckles with five white buckles.

personality

Rakka is gentle and kind under normal circumstances. She wants people to like her, and is usually likable. She is quick to approach people, and sees the best in them. She wants others to be happy, and will often try to keep interactions on their terms--even if she knows they are having problems, if they pretend they don't exist, she will do her best to pretend as well. She also wants to be happy herself, of course, and often gets lonely. She is happiest when she's around others who are happy. She is somewhat innocent, but not completely, as she has had hardship in her life.

Rakka is introspective, and spends a lot of time thinking about her situation and what to do about it. She may try to pretend things are okay for a while, but she will actively attempt to better her situation or the situations of others. She will follow her emotions more often than not. She will go out of her way to help, even if she's really meddling, but she is willing to keep things secret when necessary. She is quick to trust, believe in, and forgive someone, but also quick to feel abandoned and lonely.

abilities

Rakka can sew, and will generally try to be helpful. She also tends to make people more confident and trusting, if only because she is so trusting herself. She will forgive a lot. A bit of magic from the wall has rubbed off on her from the walls which protect Glie, which is where she works, gathering leaves which are what haibane halos are made of. Remaining in Glie has kept these dormant, and she has never used them (doesn't even realize she has them), but she can create bright points of light, a very small barrier (about the size of a dinner plate, originating from her hands), and can throw aforementioned points of light at things to injure them.

weaknesses

Rakka has never had to fight. What little magic she has is something she has absolutely no experience with, as it has never been active when she was in Glie, and she is a generally gentle person, more likely to run off, or at least stay out of it.

Rakka is a bit selfish in regards to company. She always wants to be around people, and may feel abandoned if given even the smallest reason to feel in such a way. She has trouble letting go when others leave, clinging to their memory beyond what is healthy. She is also extremely trusting of her friends, and even when others may think they are dangerous, she will continue to believe that they have good in them. She is gullible in this respect, and in that she is likely to believe what people tell her in general--she will trust by default until given a very good reason not to trust, and the longer she knows someone, the harder it is for them to break her trust, even when everyone else may have. Even when someone is directly telling her what they have done to wrong her, she will actively, violently deny it. She would take a betrayal, if she accepted it as one, very hard, however, and would be miserable and probably do foolish things as a result--often things which are an attempt to restore her faith in the person who betrayed her. Even after this, if they were ever to need her help, she would give it to them. It would take something extreme to fully break her trust--killing someone she cares about, or continual hatred in her direction. She will literally throw herself in front of a train for someone she cares about and trusts, for good or ill, even if they have told her they hate her.

Rakka meddles in an attempt to help. She has good intent, but doesn't always know the entire situation before jumping in, and while she will stick with what she's started, things may get worse before they get better. Her emotions lead her to do often foolish things, such as climbing down into rusted wells in the middle of deep forests.

history

Rakka was born as a haibane in a large, grey and green cocoon. She had no memories of any previous life she may have had. While in the cocoon, she had a dream--she dreamed of falling from the sky. This is where she got her name--Rakka means "falling"; all haibane are named for their cocoon dreams. Reki, another haibane, found and named her, and Hikari gave Rakka her halo, which didn't stick at first and often causes her hair to stand on end. She soon grew her wings, with Reki helping her. This is a painful process where the wings burst from the shoulder blades of the haibane and then must be washed of blood before they stain. Hers were charcoal grey, meaning she was born free from sin.

She made friends with the haibane Kuu, who acted as her mentor, suggesting a room for her to live in, showing her around the town of Glie, and making her feel at home in general. Kuu left, however--she had her Day of Flight, the time when a haibane leaves and flies over the walls of Glie. Rakka was devastated. She could not be happy for Kuu, feeling only that she had been abandoned, and eventually this fixation caused her feathers to begin to turn black. She was now sin-bound; she could not have her day of flight until this was fixed. Reki, the haibane which found her cocoon, revealed that she was also sin-bound, although she had been like this from the day she came out of her cocoon, and could not properly remember her cocoon dream. Reki gives her dye so Rakka's wings do not appear to have black blotches.

Rakka followed a bird into the Western Woods, which are deep and treacherous, to a well. She climbed inside upon seeing a dead bird. The rusted rungs gave way, and she fell in, spraining her ankle. The bird was the spirit of someone she knew from before she was a haibane, although she did not know who, who rescued her. Rakka allowed the bird to forgive her, and was free from sin. However, while wandering in the woods, she touched the wall. This is a grave crime, and it made her very sick. Reki had to get the medicine for her.

Later, when Reki was convinced she would never be forgiven, she hid in her art studio, which she had turned into a giant mural of what little of her dream she could remember. Rakka wanted to save her, but Reki said she had been lying to her the entire time, helping her just so she could receive her own salvation. Rakka was not deterred, however, and as soon as Reki called out for help, she jumped in front of the train from Reki's dream (her dream became real, and it was of being run over by a train). Reki was saved and forgiven, and she then left for the Western Woods, where she had her Day of Flight. Rakka was able to accept that this was a good thing for Reki.

Rakka later discovered twin cocoons growing in one of the rooms. She was very excited about the hatching, and was spending much of the time she wasn't working watching them mature. She was whisked away to Paixao before they hatched.
